Band of Skulls

bandofskulls2On our recent interview with Cam from JET, he ran through a quick list of bands that we needed to check out. Naturally he had my full attention because if he says a band rocks out, I’m inclined to believe that they do in fact rock out. And while he named off old favorites like The Rolling Stones, he also named recent bands that are already known for their rocking out capabilities like The Dead Weather and, of course, Band of Skulls.

Now admittedly I had only known of Band of Skulls through one of their songs entitled “Death By Diamonds and Pearls”.  But after checking out their entire album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey, I knew instantly why someone who knew so much of rocking out would be fans of these guys.  The whole album is rock and roll central and has a more classic sound closer to earlier Black Keys stuff with even a hint of JET.  This British rock band is exploding on to the scene with, among other things, the release of their single “Friends” on the newest soundtrack for the second installment of the “Twilight” series.  Now I know what you’re thinking, “Twilight?  Really?  They went that route?”  Well, you’d be surprised to know that Bon Iver, Thom Yorke, OK Go and The Killers also went that route.  So if Band of Skulls got asked to be in that club, then they’ve most definitely got my vote.

The interesting blend of male and female vocals with catchy guitar licks makes Band of Skulls a rock troupe to keep on your radar.  They were formed relatively recently in 2008 and have already released their first album to much critical acclaim (add us to the list.)  My personal favorites include “Death By Diamonds and Pearls”, “Light of the Morning” and the kick-ass “Patterns.”  And as always, if it’s good enough for JET, it’s good enough for me.
