DJ Format

Back in 2005, DJ Format, a.k.a Matt Ford, brought forth his sophomore album If You Can’t Join ‘Em…Beat ‘EmFormat hails from the United Kingdom and his collaborators on the album, Abdominal and D-Sisive, call Canada their home.  Growing up, I would have told you the major exports of the UK and Canada were fish & chips and hockey.  That would certainly explain my not-so-stellar high school geography grades.  Who knew that their true exports were hip-hop?  Well now you know.  And of course knowing is half the battle.

The team of DJ Format, Abdominal and D-Sisive, create music that is playful, intelligent and witty.  If You Can’t Join ‘Em…Beat ‘Em delivers fast-paced lyrics over well-crafted beats.  In a genre that often highlights negative stereotypes, these boys choose to focus on the more playful side of life.  I listen to this album when I want to put a smirk on my face.  I also listen to this album because I was able to memorize the well-articulated lyrics.  So as far as I am concerned, when I am driving in my car, I too am one of the collaborators on this album.

If you enjoy A Tribe Called Quest and Jurassic 5, you will appreciate DJ Format’s style.  As a matter of fact, if you pay close attention you might just hear Chali 2na & Akil of Jurassic 5 making a guest appearance.  I would highly recommend you check out “3 Feet Deep”, “Ugly Brothers”, “The Place” and “Separated at Birth”.

The insanely creative video for “3 Feet Deep” is what sold me on DJ Format.  If you love music and video games this music video was made for you.
